When I first started getting into magic in middle school the first thing I was shown was tarot. Nobody took the time to teach it to me but I saw a lot of people doing readings on others and themselves. I’ve had many a girlfriend do a reading on me in my life. Because it was always explained to me in terms of psychological self help and completely devoid of spiritual associations, I had ignored it for a very long time until I really started taking magic seriously just few years ago.
as I’ve been doing tarot on myself and on friends and family, I’ve really started to understand what people mean when they say that their decks understand them and like/dislike themselves and others. Before I got into it, this concept seemed utterly foolish. I wasn’t aware of animism or the idea of cards having a spiritual inner essence and consciousness. Now that I have a couple of readings under my belt I can safely say that me and my deck are in tune with each other on a very heightened level. My deck is also awakened and consecrated to Hekate, queen of the roads and of the crossroads.
another way I have learned about forming a relationship with your deck is through using decks that seem to have no understanding or care of me or my questions whatsoever. I recently got a mini Rider Waite deck for me to use when I’m out and about on hikes or other excursions. I’ve only done 3-4 reading with this deck and I am shocked at how out of sync it is. Nothing I pull makes any sense to my questions and I am unable to intuitively divine a meaning relating to my question from the cards I have pulled. It is like this deck and I are speaking a different language that neither of us understand.
in conclusion I thought I’d share this piece of beginner wisdom so you know that tarot is a very real and powerful tool but has its obstacles that can be overcome by the reader.
Shuffle and read often, and I’ll see you again in the Strange Dominions
